Proceeds from the performance will benefit the Rotary Challenge Grant to End Polio Now.  The Rotary Challenge is to raise $200 million by 2012 to match a $255 million grant made by The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to be used in direct support of immunization activities carried out by the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, which consists of Rotary International & its partners; the World Health Organization, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, and UNICEF. The grant is one of the largest challenge grants ever given by the Gates Foundation, and is the largest ever received by Rotary International.  When presenting the challenge, Bill Gates said, “We don’t know exactly when the last child will be affected.  But we do have the vaccines to wipe it out.  Countries do have the will to deploy all the tools at their disposal.  If we all have the courage to see this effort through to the end, then we will eradicate polio.”   Since 1985, when Rotary International made the eradication of polio a top priority, worldwide cases have dropped from 350,000 each year, to less than 1700 each year, a 99% decrease, with new cases now found in only limited geographic areas in 4 countries of the world.  For more information on Rotary International and polio eradication, visit www.rotary.org, or contact the President of Rotary Club of Franklin County, Phil Lemere at plemere@greenfieldsavings.com
